If there’s a next life, then I’d prefer to come to this world as poor and ragged as I first came but not living the life of a prostitute as my mother wanted. Boma was a village for hopeless people, there was no life there, the people there lived their life like there was no future, giving birth to kids was the only known achievement in Boma, the roads were terrible, nobody from the city was interested in building houses there,if anyone had a phone, every one would go to the person’s house for a feast to celebrate the arrival of the new phone, this was where my mother and I lived. When I turned fourteen,my mother encouraged me to sleep with men to earn money,’eh？prostitution’,I said and wham！one hot slap landed on my face,’is me you is call a prostitution,is it not what I feed you on？,I say sleep with men,not prostitute on them’,yes, that was my mum,I wouldn’t say she was an illiterate, she could read out the letters in the alphabet and she also tried not to speak pidgin like the rest of the women in the villiage. ‘Your father leave us since,I feding you,you are big girl now, bring money into the door of this house,no food for an idler’,she yelled almost every morning before we left for her shop where she sold ‘ogogoro’,when it was getting dark, she would send me home with money for food, then she would come back extremely late at night. I had no future in that village,I was fourteen with only primary school education and then, I didn’t know that primary school education required lots of teachers to take different classes,we just assembled in the village hall, with long benches,no books or pencil just recitation of the alphabet and making sentences with simple words,we were taught only that one subject by one teacher. Speaking of school, there was this guy I was in a relationship with in primary school,he name was Dayo,Dayo and I would go home together after school,we sneaked into each other’s homes when our parents were away from home,he mostly sneaked into my house at night when my mum was not around and somethings would play out, we didn’t go past our waists but we touched every other parts of our body,it was ecstatic,I was planning give birth to kids for Dayo when I grew up, until we finished primary and his father could afford to take him out of Boma,he said he was going to live in his aunty’s house in the city, I was not really happy but he promised to come back for me and so did some of my peers go too but I remained,I had no father who would work tirelessly and send me to school. I thought he was dead.
I learnt that my father was not dead when I was ten years old,all those while,I didn’t know he was Bankole the palmwine tapper living with his two children and wife that lived four houses away from mine. He impregnanted my mum and denied it,so I was born out of wedlock and my mother was left to fend for me,the only brother she had whom she helped to move into the city had forgotten about her. I was even grateful that Bankole did not claim me if not my mother and I would get the beating his ‘legitimate family’ received whenever he got drunk.
I was still looking for what to do in Boma till I turned seventeen, with only ”primary school education”,most jobs there were for men,I couldn’t be a farmer without assistance from my mum,I couldn’t be a hunter,I couldn’t be a fisherman,I had no idea about that, the norm in Boma was for women to stay at home and wait for their husbands,if they didn’t have husbands, they resorted to ”sleeping with men”. My mum’s pester to work was driving me crazy daily, even if I decided to go with her idea, is it those old men with beards, that stunk of liquor with money or those good looking youths who didn’t stink of liquor but had no money？,I was really tired of following my mum to her shop, despite our hardship,I wasn’t skinny,I was a bit chubby, had wide hips and well every other part of my body fell in place,so those drunkards in her shop would oogle at me without shame. My mum was threatening to stop feeding me,I needed to think of something and fast. Well,This was just a brief history of how my life had been so far.
Strecthing on the mat that lay on the hard cold mud sand was me Uwanah that morning inside our incomplete house,I looked outside and it was getting bright,I was getting tired of Boma,I wanted to leave,I turned around to the left side and saw my mum beautiful face, she was still asleep, though she had offended me by saying she would not care for me,I still loved her and hoped that I would be able to fend for myself and her,we would get up any minute from now and go on with our daily routine so I stood up, took out the little soup we had, to heat it up on the firewood. My mother got up a while later and urged me to make preparations as we would be going out soon.
My mum left the house before me complaining about how sluggish I was so she left in anger that morning. I was on my way to her shop,I passed Dayo’s house as I did daily and I remembered him immediately, I asked myself if he would ever return to Boma, just as I was thinking, the wind carried words to my ears from the direction of their house,I heard mama Dayo calling,’Dayo！,Dayo！’,I was shocked, could Dayo really be back or is his mum yelling out for him because she misses him？No！,’I must check’,I said to myself and walked in the direction of their house, I moved closer to their door and called softly Dayo twice, I heard a voice answer,’yes mum’,the voice sounded nice, not like the Dayo I know,’when did he start answering,’mum？’, ‘I no call you ooo’, I heard mama Dayo say, ‘then, who did？’,I heard the voice again. I was really getting curious, even if it wasn’t Dayo,I just wanted to know who it was, this time I decided to call out loudly,’Dayo’ ,and the opened the door,I saw a tall, dark skinned, handsome guy,it was Dayo！Dayo indeed but more handsome, the clothes I wore were nothing compared to the new clothes he was putting on,I smiled at him with everything in me but his reaction was something I never expected.

Hmmm.0October 13, 2017 at 3:34 pm #1099644
‘Uwanah？,you mean that small Uwanah, you’ve really grown, （no,only you will grow),I said in my thoughts,I was actually disappointed,he was able to recognize me after I had explained for the upteenth time,I mean,it’s been like five or six years,I understood that he’d forgotten,I actually thought if he remembered me,’Uwanah’,he’d immediately hug instead,he just stared at me like I was a nuisance,I almost reminded him of our relationship in the past but I didn’t because if he didn’t recognize me,how would I talk of relationship？,’so how have you been？’,he asked,he was speaking so well,I got intimidated,’eh,me？fine na,you nko？’,I asked,’good, thanks,so I was busy before you called me,I’m going in now, bye’,he waved and entered the house immediately. I stood outside staring in shock as I thought of how much he had changed, I was thinking that if he returned,we would resume our normal activities. I eventually turned around and started heading towards my mum’s shop,on my way,I met one of the girls in the village,Bimbo, she was also like me,she accquired only primary school education, she wasn’t fluent in english but she could speak pidgin so well,’Uwanah, how you dey？’,she asked,’I dey fine, where you dey go？’,I asked, ‘you no hear say Dayo don come back for night yesterday？,I wan go see am na’,she told me, I felt like fighting her,Bimbo was a flirt, not just her, almost all the villiage girls where, they needed to make a living , morever,I was intimidated my her beauty, height and shape, now she wanted to go near my Dayo and she was asking me if I didn’t know that Dayo was back,’Why I no go sey Dayo don come back？’,I replied, ‘I think sey you no know na,and they guy be like sey im get money’,she said giggling,I couldn’t conceal how angry I was,I just hissed and walked out,she called out for me but I didn’t look back nor respond. I got to my mother’s shop very angry, not just because of Dayo’s reaction but also at the fact that Bimbo and the girls in the village would flock around him like birds on a nest.
‘Uwanah, come here’,my mum called out from the backyard,’I’m coming,Mama’,I said and ran to the backyard,I saw her standing with a man who had a beer in one hand and snuff in the other, staring at me like he was checking out for meat in a soup.
I frowned and said,’Mama,I’m here’,’Uwanah baby’,she said, I suspected she was up to something, she repeated it again, then I said, ‘Mama’,without a smile, ‘See this man, you’re follow him home today with ogogoro’, I almost laughed, was she thinking I was a kid, that I wouldn’t know that she wanted me to sleep with him？,I looked at the person she called a man from head to toe and looked at her,I was angry earlier(Dayo and Bimbo’s wahala),now they were stiring up another one, ‘Mama,me？to go and do what na,if he want to drink ogogoro, let him drink it in the shop na’,I replied like I didn’t know what she meant, my mum’s countenance had changed,I began to develope a little fear as I thought about how the day I feared had come upon me,the day she’d hook me up with one of those rascals. She looked at me from head to toe, then turned to the rascal and said,’she are going with you tonight, worry not’,she assured the man and he left. I had offended my mum,I was very hungry, that soup was what I wanted to eat but there was no garri so I licked the soup alone but I was feeling dizzy, very weak, hungry and shaky,I couldn’t tell my mum if not, she’d remind me that I was old enough to feed myself,I sat down on an old bench outside her shop watching my mum savour the taste of fried meat, she bought earlier,I was starving but as far as I was concerned, sleeping with that old man wasn’t an option. As I got up to take a cup of water from the drum in the shop to fill my stomach, a well dressed man came in,he was Soji, the most ”wealthiest ” man in the village,he had several lands for farming and different houses, ‘what could he be doing in our shop？’ I asked myself, the seats were occupied but as soon as he entered, some people gave up the comfort of seating and displeased themselves by standing, he sat down,my mum immediately sent me to ask what he wanted, I greeted him,he gave me his order and paid immediately, unlike some men who’d beg to pay the next day, I was still feeling dizzy but I managed to get the beer and cup on a wooden tray, I don’t know if it was because I turned around quickly with the tray to the direction of the man or because I was extremely tired but all I knew was that my eyes went blank for a minute and the tray came crashing down on my feet, No body saved the ogogoro I had opened already,it just poured out quickly like water from a tap,I somewhat regained strength and saw the mishap I had caused,I’m pretty sure I saw smoke coming out from my mum’s head that day, I threw her drink away, what she bought with hard earned money, I knew it was finished for me.

nice beginning0October 13, 2017 at 4:18 pm #1099669
‘Thank you sir！’,I said repeatedly to Mr. Soji,he had just saved me from receiving the beating of my life that I’d get from my mum and given me an opportunity to do something with my life. Here’s what happened, after spiling the beer,my mum threw the plate, which she used earlier for the fried meat at me, Yes！,you saw it,’a plate’, I dodged and it hit another customer,my mother charged at me immediately like a soldier in a battle field,I had never seen her so angry,I don’t know if it was because of the spilled beer or the customer which the plate was thrown at but she stamped my face with her fingers from the slap I received,’it was more like the ‘evil step-mother and step-daughter’ scene. I can’t even remember how she constructed the english but She complained about how stubborn and disobedient I was. I was exhausted and angry, all I grabbed was her yells about my refusal to work,in front of the customers, those very useless men started supporting her, they urged me to be a good girl,I guess their insipid talk encouraged my mother to remove her worn out slippers and cause me extraordinary pain by hitting it on my back,I yelled out in pain, while she said,’Bend and rag up that thing now’,I was light headed from ravenous hunger so I slowly bent down to pick up the cup and tray,my mother was about to hit me again when Soji intervened,’stop it,no beat am,how much？I go pay？’,he asked,my mother smiled at him and said,’tri hundrid nira’,she said,he dipped his hands into his pocket, brought out some money and smiled at me,’ what’s funny’,I said to myself and forcefully smiled back at him and said,’thank you sir’,’no problem’,he replied. My mum collected the money and looked at me like she still had plans for me. I picked up the tray and headed to the backyard to clean it up,I had not started washing the tray when I heard my name,’Uwa’,from my mum,I looked up to the heavens and down to the earth wondering if I was cursed,’Uwa’,she yelled again, this time continously, like I was supposed to dance to the sound of my own name, she didn’t stop calling even when I said ‘ma’ till I showed up,I was ready for another yell but her reaction left me puzzled,’shey, you are eat？’,she asked with concern,I was shocked,I still don’t know if the spirit of care had given her a divine touch that day,’no ma’,I said potraying a weaker look to attract more pity, ‘Okay,Soji are say that he is see you, reply first, then collecting money from me to buy food’,she said,’thank you ma’,I replied. All the while,Soji was staring at us,I actually thought he had ulterior motives with the way he was staring at me until I knew of his intentions,I walked over to his seat and said,’sir,my mum say that you want to see me’,then I wasn’t also fluent in english,’yes,so na here you dey everyday？’,he asked,’yes sir’,I replied, ‘okay, shey you fit work for farm？’,he asked, what？he seriously asked me that, was I able to work on a farm？,I was ready to do anything apart from my mum’s idea, to leave that shop,I grinned and excitedly said,’yes’. He explained to me that he just got a new land,he needed people to cultivate on the land,he said,he normally didn’t employ girls but since I was jobless and said I was ready to work,he decided to help me,the pay was considerable, even if it wasn’t,I didn’t care,at least I’d be a worker,he asked me to resume the next day, after giving me directions to his residence before he left,I thanked him like I just learnt how to use the word,’thank you’, I was very happy,I didn’t feel the pangs of hunger anymore,I’d earn money, buy new clothes, gain respect from my mum and especially Dayo, would not look down on me,I looked up at yhe heavens and down at the earth again, this time, thinking of how blessed I was,I just couldn’t wait for the next day to start working.
