    THE GUARDIANS OF TANKUTE
    EPISODE: EPISODE 5
I rode back to our camp like nothing had happened, I tried my best to hide the tears already packed up in my eyes. “Did you see him, wenakite?” one of the Man hunters asked me as I entered into our settlement. “No, I did not, his hut was opened but no one was in it” I answered him and made to walk into my tent, “Then, in that case, we shall all go search for him today, if we don’t find him, then we shall appoint a new warrior lord to guide us” he said and walked into his hut. I ran into my tent and fell on my wooden bed as tears poured from my eyes, the cannibals are back again and this time, they came for the warrior lord.
    …………………..
The river from Tankute leads to the small village of Atata, the water serves as a boundary between the both villages but that doesn’t stop them from doing business together. The major occupation of the people of Atata was farming, a rich man was known by the number of yams in his barn or how large his farmland is. Early this particular morning, Anya, a woman in her mid-thirties could be seen walking toward the stream. She is the wife of Omiyi, a young man who had come to settle down in Atata. Anya during her days use to be the most beautiful maiden of Atata but now she was no longer a maiden though she is still more beautiful than some of the maidens of Atata. In her left hand, a water pot made of clay could be seen, she was tying a waist wrapper and a b----t wrapper. You might find it hard to believe she is a mother but yes, she was, a mother of a girl, a girl of about 4 years old, faith Omiyi. She swayed majestically to the stream, and made to dip her pot into the water, she drifted back to when she was still a young maiden, she will always take her bath at the stream before fetching water, but now that she is married, she can do such no more. She dipped her pot into the shallow part of the water, she was just about bringing it out when she saw something flowing towards her, it was a basket. She have heard stories of how the gods do bless people with gifts from the river, maybe the gods wanted to bless her she thought. She waited patiently waiting for the gifts to come to her and true enough, the basket flowed to her, but was it a gift? No, it wasn’t, rather it was a baby soaked with blood. She drew back in shock and from a distance stared at the blood soaked baby in the basket, the baby eyes was open and he was moving his body, he was alive. “gods of our land, what is this you have brought to me this morning?” she asked the gods, her eyes were still fixed on the baby. She thought about walking away but her heart won’t let her, that being in the basket is a cute innocent baby. She finally summoned up courage and carried the baby out of the basket, he smiled like he wasn’t feeling the pain, the pain from the wound by his neck side. “Oh sorry” she said to the boy like he could hear her. She cleaned him up with the water from the stream and then hid him in her water pot which she had made empty. She placed the water pot on her head and swayed majestically back home like nothing had happened, she greeted everyone she met on the way back home, if the dogs didn’t miss out, “ Nkita, how are you” she would greet any wandering dog she meets on the road. “My husband, come and see o” she shouted as she dropped her water pot in the middle of their compound the moment she got home, Omiyi from one of his huts ran out towards his wife, “what took you so long?” he asked her, “come and see it, come and see what took me so long” she shouted and he increased his pace towards her. She held his head and directed it into her water pot, he jumped back in fear on seeing the creature in it. “Woman, what have you done this time, where did you get a baby from?” he asked her and she willingly narrated all that happened to him. “gods of our land” he shouted as she completed her narration, “we shall keep the child” Anya said and he stared at her, “what will the people say?” he asked her carrying the baby from the water pot, “haven’t you heard of women giving birth without protruding stomach?” she asked him, he nodded. “We will tell the villagers that was what happened to me” she added with a smile, “who would drop such a handsome child in the stream with such wounds?” Omiyi asked rhetorically, if only he knew the child he was holding happens to be a cannibal. “But something must be done, the chief priest must know about this, we don’t know if the child will bring misfortune to our land” she told her husband, he nodded in agreement with her. “Go inside and take care of the baby, prepare bitter leaf soup for me for lunch, am going to tap my wine” Omiyi told her as he went to fetch his cutlass and rope. “Go well my husband, may the gods guide you” she prayed as she swayed inside, this time the baby was crying.
The went to the shrine of Eze Ani, the chife priest of Ani the evening of that same day, even if no one else knows, the chief priest of Ani must know. They narrated all to the chief priest that evening, he heard what they had to say and they did some incantations. “The both of you have found favor in the eyes of the gods, that child will be great, he will do great things, take care of him, don’t maltreat him and remember, to one else must know how he came to be part of your family” Eze Ani concluded, they grinned happily as they stood up to take their leave, “thank you great one” they appreciated before going out. Eze Ani turned back to his shrine and did some incantations, and that was when he heard a voice, a voice him alone could hear, “ that child will grow up to kill you” was the voice he heard, it was a prophesy.
